When Is My MOT Due? Dates, Reminders and the Rules

MOT dates catch people out because the rules are slightly odd. Here is the short version.

The basics

• Most cars and vans need their first MOT on the third anniversary of first registration.
• After that it is every twelve months.
• You can test up to one calendar month minus a day before the expiry date and keep the same renewal date. Test earlier than that and you lose the remaining time.

Driving without a valid MOT

It is an offence, with a fine of up to £1,000, and your insurance may not respond to a claim. The only exceptions are driving to a pre booked test or to a garage for repairs that have been arranged.

If it fails

You can only drive the car away if the existing MOT is still valid and no dangerous defect was recorded. With a dangerous defect, the car should not be driven at all until it is repaired.

Vans and fleet vehicles

Light goods vehicles up to 3,000kg follow the same three year then annual pattern, but fleet operators usually schedule tests early in the month so there is room to repair and retest without losing vehicle days. Larger vehicles have their own annual test regime.
