Nothing changes a car like a full respray. Faded, scratched and stone chipped paint goes in one end, and a car that looks years younger comes out the other. But the difference between a respray that still looks superb in ten years and one that peels within eighteen months is almost entirely in the preparation you never see. Here is what a proper job involves, from before to after.

Why cars need a full respray

Most full resprays come down to one of four reasons:

Faded and oxidised paint. Red and dark colours suffer most. Once the clear coat has broken down, polishing will not bring it back.

Widespread damage. Years of car park dings, key scratches, stone chips and poorly matched touch ups across several panels.

Previous poor repairs. Mismatched panels, overspray on trims and visible repair edges from earlier work.

A colour change or restoration. Classics and cherished cars where the owner wants the car back to, or better than, factory finish.

Stage one: strip down and assessment

The car is stripped of bumpers, lights, grilles, badges, mirrors, handles, window trims and number plates. This is the first place a cheap job cuts corners. Painting around trims instead of removing them leaves taped edges that lift and peel, and it is the single easiest way to spot a budget respray a year later.

With the car bare, every dent, ripple and rust spot shows up under workshop lighting. Each one is repaired properly: dents pulled or filled, rust cut out and treated, never simply painted over. Paint over rust and it will bubble back through within months.

Stage two: preparation, the part that decides everything

Ask any sprayer and they will tell you the same thing: a respray is 80 per cent preparation. The whole car is sanded back to give the new paint a sound, keyed surface. Old clear coat that is failing has to come off entirely, because new paint is only as strong as what it sits on.

Primer is then applied and flatted back, sometimes more than once, until every panel is perfectly straight and smooth. Guide coats are used to reveal any remaining low spots. This stage takes days on a typical car, and it is where most of the cost of a quality respray sits.

Stage three: masking and painting

Everything that is not being painted is masked: glass, door shuts where required, engine bay, wheels and underside. The car then goes into a dust controlled, temperature controlled spray booth.

Colour is applied in several thin, even coats, followed by clear coat for gloss and protection. Modern water based basecoats are matched to the factory colour code, and on older cars the colour can be tinted to allow for how the original paint has aged. The car then cures in the booth at a controlled temperature so the paint hardens evenly.

Stage four: flatting, polishing and reassembly

Straight out of the gun, even a good paint job has a slight texture called orange peel. For a true show finish the cured paint is wet flatted with very fine abrasives and then machine polished to a deep, mirror gloss. Trims, lights and badges go back on, and the car is checked panel by panel under bright light before it leaves.

Before and after: what you should expect to see

A proper full respray should give you:

Consistent colour and gloss on every panel, in daylight, not just under workshop lights.

No overspray on rubbers, glass, trims or inside door shuts.

No tape lines around handles, lights or badges, because they were removed, not painted around.

Straight panels with no ripples showing through the reflection.

Clean door shuts and jambs, either painted or neatly masked to a deliberate line.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

A full respray on a standard car typically takes two to four weeks depending on how much body and rust repair is needed. Costs vary widely with the size of the car and the condition it starts in, but be wary of any quote that seems dramatically cheaper than the rest. The saving almost always comes out of the preparation, and that is the part that decides how the car looks in three years, not three weeks.

Thinking about a respray?

Every Solution Repair Group member bodyshop carries out full resprays and refurbishments to the same audited standard, and every member is rated above 4.8 stars by their customers.
