Had a car accident? Here is what to do next
We are sorry to hear you have had an accident. Follow the steps below, then let us take care of your claim, your repair and getting you back on the road.
Five steps after a car accident
1. Make sure everyone is safe
Stop as soon as it is safe, switch on your hazard lights and move people away from traffic. Call 999 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked.
2. Swap details
UK law requires you to give your name, address and vehicle registration to anyone with reasonable grounds to ask. Note the other driver's insurer too.
3. Collect evidence
Photograph the vehicles, number plates, road layout and any damage. Take names and numbers of witnesses and check for dash cam footage.
4. Report it
If you could not swap details, report the accident to the police within 24 hours. Tell your insurer, even if you do not plan to claim.
5. Call us before you agree to anything
You have the right to choose your own repairer. We can manage the claim, arrange recovery and a courtesy car, and cover up to £500 of your excess.
Common questions
Can I choose where my car is repaired?
Yes. Your insurer may suggest a repairer, but you can choose a bodyshop you trust. We will deal with the insurer for you.
What if the accident was not my fault?
On a non-fault claim the costs are recovered from the other driver's insurer, so you should not lose your no claims bonus or pay an excess.
Will I get a courtesy car?
In most cases we can arrange a courtesy or like-for-like replacement vehicle while your car is repaired.
