Preparing Your Car for Winter: A UK Driver's Guide

Batteries, tyres, antifreeze and lights all work harder in winter. Here is how to prepare your car for the cold months, what to do first if an accident catches you out, and a reminder that we love a restoration project too.

Why your car needs a winter check now

Winter is the hardest time of year to be a car. Cold starts, wet roads, salted surfaces and short daylight hours all stack the odds against you, and small problems that were easy to ignore in September become breakdowns and accidents in January. The good news is that an hour of preparation in the driveway covers most of it.

Here is the checklist we give every customer who asks us this time of year.

    1. Battery

Batteries fail in cold weather more than any other cause of winter breakdowns. A battery that manages a summer start can struggle below five degrees, and the colder it gets the harder the engine turns over.

    • If your car cranks slowly in the morning, get the battery tested now, not in December.
    • Most factors and garages will test it free in a couple of minutes.
    • If the battery is over four years old, budget for a replacement before the first hard frost.
    • Short journeys drain batteries faster than they recharge them. A weekly longer run helps.

    2. Tyres

The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but grip in wet and icy conditions drops off well before that. We recommend 3mm going into winter.

    • Check all four tyres, including the spare, with a proper tread gauge.
    • Look for cracks, bulges and uneven wear, which point to pressure or alignment problems.
    • Set pressures to the car maker's figures, found on the fuel flap or in the handbook, and check them fortnightly because cold air lowers pressure.
    • If you drive a lot of rural or hilly roads, all season tyres are worth considering.

    3. Antifreeze and screenwash

Antifreeze is cheap. A cracked engine block from frozen coolant is not. Most modern cars use a long life coolant, so check the handbook before topping up and never mix types.

    • Coolant should sit between the min and max marks when the engine is cold.
    • Top up screenwash with a winter grade mix. Summer strength can freeze on the windscreen just when you need it most.
    • Carry a spare bottle in the boot. Winter grit throws far more spray onto the glass.

    4. Wipers, lights and visibility

Streaking wipers and blown bulbs are minor faults that become real safety issues on a dark, wet A road.

    • Replace wiper blades that smear or judder. They cost little and last a season.
    • Walk round the car and check every light, including number plate and fog lights.
    • Clean the windscreen inside and out. A hazy film amplifies glare from low winter sun.
    • Clear every window, mirror and light before you set off. Driving with frosted glass is an offence, and snow left on the roof can slide onto the windscreen under braking.

    5. Your five minute winter check

    • Battery tested and terminals clean
    • Tread above 3mm and pressures correct
    • Coolant and winter screenwash topped up
    • Wipers clearing properly, all lights working
    • Brakes feeling firm, no grinding or pulling
    • Emergency kit in the boot: torch, phone charger, blanket, de icer, scraper, jump leads and a hi vis vest

If any of that is beyond you or you would rather a professional looked, most of our network centres will run through it with you. It takes minutes and it prevents most winter failures we see.

If you do have an accident, call us first

Even a well prepared car cannot account for black ice, standing water or another driver having a bad morning. If winter catches you out, here is the most important advice in this article: call us before you call your insurer.

You have the legal right to choose who repairs your car. It is your vehicle, whatever an insurer's approved network might suggest. When you ring Solution Repair Group first we can:

    • Give you a free, no obligation estimate from photos you send us
    • Handle the insurance claim paperwork with you, so you know where you stand before you commit
    • Arrange a courtesy car on insurance repairs, so you are not stuck at home while we work
    • Repair the damage to manufacturer standards, on bodyshop and insurance work alike

Winter accidents are rarely convenient, but the repair does not have to be stressful. One call and we take it from there. You can reach us on 0800 048 8380 or send photos of the damage for a free written estimate.

And when winter is over: restorations

Winter is also when we see the cars people dream about. Corrosion, tired paint and accident damage to a cherished car are our favourite kind of challenge, because Solution Repair Group happily takes on car restorations alongside everyday accident repairs.

Whether it is a classic that needs rust cutting and welding, a full respray back to factory finish, or a project car you want bringing back to life, the same paint and panel experts who handle insurance work handle restorations too. Bring it in for a look around the workshop and an honest conversation about what is possible and what it costs.

    Frequently asked questions

When should I prepare my car for winter?

Early autumn is ideal, before the first frost. Batteries, tyres and coolant all take time to sort, and garages get busy once the cold weather arrives.

Are winter tyres worth it in the UK?

If you drive early mornings, rural roads or hilly routes, yes. They stop far shorter in cold, wet conditions. For mostly urban motorway driving, good all season tyres are usually enough.

Can I claim on my insurance for winter accident damage?

Often yes, but it depends on the cost of the damage against your excess and how a claim would affect your renewal. Call us first and we will talk you through both the private and insurance options before you decide.

Do you take on old or classic cars?

We do. From rust repair and panel work to full resprays, restoration projects are welcome at our centres. Send us some photos and we will give you an honest assessment.

Get your car winter ready, and if the season catches you out anyway, remember the golden rule: call us first. We will happily help, and we will have you back on the road properly.
